My work combines photography, video, and material-based experimentation to examine how masculinity is materially constructed, enforced, and ruined through labor, touch, and risk. Tools and construction materials are a vital aspect of my practice. My grandfather was a roofer and built the house I live in. After he passed when I was young, he left the remnants of his life around the house, including a workbench in the garage, which continues to inform my understanding of labor and gender expectations. My most recent project, Working With Nails, began with the polarity of painted fingernails and drywall nails, then expanded to include ropes, gloves, and cinderblocks, deconstructing masculinity through objects associated with labor, strength, and control.
